In 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes pattern for the national flag. This would follow almost one year after the Declaration of Independence and more than a decade before the U.S. Constitution was finalized.
* The stripes of the flag were probably adopted from the flag of the Sons of Liberty, which had 5 red and 4 white stripes.
* Originally official U.S. Flags could have stars with 5,6,7,or 8 points. These stars were scattered or arranged in many designs since each seamstress followed her own ideas and interpretations.
* The Stars and Stripes forever was first performed in Philadelphia on May 14, 1897. the composition became the national march of the U.S. in a bill signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on December 11, 1987.
