Aging Healthy and Gracefully!

There seems to be a lot of talk lately about aging gracefully. Maybe it’s because I am now in my 50’s that I notice it more, or subconsciously I think about it, and wonder if I am aging as healthy and gracefully as I can?

Aging is inevitable, it happens to all of us, it does not discriminate.   What steps can you take to grow older while maintaining your health and healthy outlook?

Here are a few suggestions to help you on this new journey of your life.

Staying Active

Make sure you are doing some form of exercise each day for at least 20 minutes.  Bike riding, walking, swimming are just a few of the low impact exercises you can do to help keep you active.

Social Interaction

Join a senior group, find a group of friends to do your exercise with, volunteer at a hospital, library, or school, work part-time,  Anything that will help to keep your mind working, and having interaction with other human beings is always good for your over all health.

Diet

Make sure you are eating a healthy diet of organic whole foods.  Try to avoid meats that have been fed antibiotics, and growth hormones, vegetables that have been sprayed with pesticides, as well as, GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”)

Most Importantly

Keep the Brain Body Communication open with regular Chiropractic care.  Your Central Nerve System, which is protected inside your spine controls every function of your body, by sending nerve impulses to the brain, which in turn, tells every organ, cell & tissue what to do.  When one of the bones in your spine moves out-of-place, it puts pressure on that nerve and the message is not clearly getting through to the body.  Therefore, your body in not working as well as it could.  It is VERY important to take the pressure off the nerve so that the messages can get through correctly.  When your brain and body are communicating properly your body is working the best that it can, allowing you to function at 100% peak performance. A Healthy Nerve System should be your number one priority to Health and Aging Gracefully.

Health Is Your Birthright!

Knock on Subluxation FistSome people think wellness is a matter of luck – as if you hit the genetic lottery with a great immune system, perfect organic function and loads of energy.  Actually, you don’t have to knock on wood to be healthy… you have more control over its natural ‘expression’ than you think.

Health is your birthright.  From the moment of conception, through adolescent growth into adulthood, the innate intelligent power of life that brought you into existence continues to re-create the best version of ‘YOU’ possible.  That includes helping you to grow strong, recover from illnesses and conquer the stresses of life.  All these vital functions of health are orchestrated by an innate power within you, through a patent nerve system – and you have complete control over how CLEAR your life line is with regular adjustments.

If you’ve noticed a huge change in your health since you’ve been receiving consistent chiropractic care, it’s not from knocking on wood.  It’s from ‘knocking’ subluxated vertebrae back into alignment so innate can do its job without interference.

Will Chiropractic Help Me?

The Power that made the body - poster

In a word, YES! But does this mean chiropractic will make you feel better with your particular health problem?

Your body is self-healing. This means your body can correct most of its own health problems. But this can only happen if your body is functioning normally. Your nervous system is the master controller of all function in your body. It is the job of your nerve system to see that everything is functioning properly and keeping you healthy.

So, Will Chiropractic Help Me?

In a word, YES!  But it is your body that ultimately heals you and helps you feel better. Chiropractors do not claim to heal you or cure you. Healing comes from inside you.

It is your nerve system that controls the function of your body and ultimately your health. Any interference to your nerve system will effect the function of your body and therefore effect your body’s ability to keep you healthy.

In essence, only you can cure you.  What the chiropractor does is locate and remove interference to your nervous system and thus allow your body’s healing abilities to take over.

When these vertebrae move out of place and cause interference to your nervous system, it is known as a subluxation.  Chiropractors seek to correct subluxations by a series of specific chiropractic adjustments to your spine. By correcting these subluxations you are allowing your nervous system to work normally and therefore allowing your body to heal itself.

So One More Time, Will Chiropractic Help Me?

In a word, YES! Chiropractic helps you by working to free your nervous system of interference from subluxations. This then allows your body’s own innate healing power to help heal you of whatever problems you may have.

Chiropractic actually helps you return to health by removing interference to your body’s nervous system. How much better you feel, or how much relief you get from any particular health problem depends on the length of time you have had your subluxations and your body’s healing capabilities.

Doctors of Chiropractic do not treat your pain, symptoms or diseases. They work to help your body’s own innate healing abilities, so that you can heal yourself.

Millions of people have found health after suffering with all kinds of problems. Your body will always be better off with a nervous system free of interference from subluxations.

I get it, I heal me!

Bedwetting Helped with Chiropractic – A Case Study

Sad BoyThe Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health, published a study on Dec. 23, 2013, documenting the case of chiropractic helping with childhood nocturnal enuresis, more commonly referred to as bedwetting.

According to the study authors,  Nocturnal enuresis is defined as repeated voiding in clothing or bed that occurs in a child over the age of 5, and occurs at least 2 times per week for more than 3 months. Bedwetting is one of the most frequent problems seen in childhood, and affects roughly 10 percent of all children at the age of 7.

In this case, a 10-year-old boy was brought to the chiropractor with the complaint of neck pain. The issue of bedwetting was not mentioned when the child was brought in for chiropractic care, even though the problem was chronic in nature, and he was wetting his bed 2 to 3 times per week. The boy was also having diurnal enuresis, also known as daytime wetting, which the mother described as  leakage.

A chiropractic examination was performed including posture observation, palpation, functional leg length analysis, and spinal range of motion. Based on the examination, it was determined that the child had multiple vertebral subluxations that caused nerve system interference.

Chiropractic adjustments were begun for the correction of the boy’s subluxations. On the second visit, the boy’s mother mentioned the bedwetting and reported that her son only had one incident of bedwetting after the first adjustment. For various reasons, there was a break in the boy’s care, during which time he had several episodes of bedwetting. Upon his return to chiropractic care, these episodes decreased and eventually discontinued. Over the next eight weeks of care, only one incident of bedwetting was reported, and no daytime wetting had occurred.

The study also recorded that after the boy’s first adjustment, his neck was not hurting. At his third appointment, he stated that his neck was again hurting from sleeping wrong. After the adjustment on his third visit, he never mentioned any more trouble with neck pain.

In their conclusion, the authors sum up this case by stating,  The case report of a ten-year-old boy who is dealing with a history of nocturnal enuresis is presented. Chiropractic evaluation and care is presented with subluxations noted and adjusted. A decrease in severity and frequency of enuresis was noted. While more studies need to be performed, chiropractic care appears to be beneficial in the effects on nocturnal enuresis in children and adolescents.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lee Haney, and Monica Brant Recommend Chiropractic

Arnold-SchwarzeneggerOn March 1, 2014, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lee Haney, Monica Brant, and numerous other famous athletes showed their support for chiropractic by speaking at the International Chiropractors Association’s Council on Sports & Fitness Symposium in Columbus, Ohio.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has always been a supporter of chiropractic and has spoken at this chiropractic event for the past 22 years. “This is the great thing about chiropractic. It’s not only when someone has an injury or a time when there’s a problem they come to the chiropractor.” Arnold continued by praising how chiropractors don’t just care for those who are having problems and are proactive with their patients, “…that’s not the only thing you do. You then give them advice on how not to get injured, and how not to get sick in the first place.”

Also in attendance was Dr. Franco Columbo, a chiropractor and former body builder who won the Mr. Olympia title twice, each time the year after Arnold. “Nothing gives you more than the chiropractic profession when it comes to health and longevity, not only for yourself, but also for your friends.” Dr. Columbo continued, “Chiropractic, more than any other profession helps you do things, instead of just giving you drugs and sending you home.”

Actor Joe Manganiello, who starred in numerous movies including Magic Mike and True Blood, accompanied Arnold to the chiropractic event. He is also a supporter of chiropractic. “I have been no stranger to chiropractic offices over the past few years. A few years back, I pinched a nerve between my five and six vertebrae and my whole back locked up.” He went on to explain that he needed to get back on the set of the movie he was shooting, “Through a great chiropractor in Los Angeles he was able to unlock that nerve. I was able to get back into shape and keep going.” He continued by noting how important chiropractic is to him. “It has been a huge part of my life.”

Body building legend and eight-time Mr. Olympia, Lee Haney spoke at the chiropractic program and gave his testimony of how chiropractic has helped him. Also presenting was Monica Brant, a multiple Ms. Fitness and Figure Champion, and a legend in women’s physique and fitness competitions, who also recanted how chiropractic helped her compete at the high level she has for years.

Before taking a picture with every chiropractor attending the event, Arnold summed up all the athletes and celebrities’ affection for chiropractic by saying, “As you can see we all love you. We love your profession.”

Chiropractic Boosts Immunity

Chiropractic-immune-systemThe nervous system and immune system are hardwired and work together to create optimal responses for the body to adapt and heal appropriately. Neural dysfunctions due to spinal misalignments are stressful to the body and cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to boost the coordinated responses of the nervous system and immune system.

The autonomic nervous system is hardwired into the lymphoid organs such as the spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, and bone marrow that produce the body’s immune response. Growing evidence is showing that immune function is regulated in part by the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system.

Subluxation is the term for misalignments of the spine that cause compression and irritation of nerve pathways affecting organ systems of the body. Subluxations are an example of physical nerve stress that affects neuronal control. According to researchers, such stressful conditions lead to altered measures of immune function & increased susceptibility to a variety of diseases.

Inflammatory based disease is influenced by both the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Nerve stimulation directly affects the growth and function of inflammatory cells. Researchers found that dysfunction in this pathway results in the development of various inflammatory syndromes such as rheumatoid arthritis and behavioral syndromes such as depression. Additionally, this dysfunctional neuro-endo-immune response plays a significant role in immune-compromised conditions such as chronic infections and cancer.

Wellness based chiropractors analyze the spine for subluxations and give corrective adjustments to reduce the stress on the nervous system. A 1992 research group found that when a thoracic adjustment was applied to a subluxated area the white blood cell (neutrophil) count collected rose significantly.

In 1975, Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor in Environmental Health at New York University, began researching the most scientifically valid ways to estimate individual susceptibility to various chronic diseases. He has conducted a tremendous amount of research in this area that includes over 160 published reports in peer reviewed journals.

Pero and his colleagues discovered that various DNA-repairing enzymes could be significantly altered following exposure to carcinogenic chemicals. He found strong evidence that an individual’s susceptibility to cancer could be determined by these enzymes. Lack of those enzymes, Pero said, ‘definitely limits not only your lifespan, but also your ability to resist serious disease consequences.’

Pero was fascinated by the relationship cancer-inducing agents had on the endocrine system. Since the nervous system regulates hormone balance, he hypothesized that the nervous system had to also have a strong influence on one’s susceptibility to cancer.

To support this argument he found a substantial amount of literature linking various kinds of spinal cord injuries and cancer. Pero found that these injuries led to a very high rate of lymphomas and lymphatic leukemias. This understanding led Pero to consider Chiropractic care as a means of reducing the risk of immune breakdown and disease.

Pero’s team measured 107 individuals who had received long-term Chiropractic care. The chiropractic patients were shown to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and a 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer or serious diseases. Interestingly, Pero found no decline with the various age groups in the study demonstrating that the DNA repairing enzymes were just as present in long-term chiropractic senior groups as they were in the younger groups.

Pero concluded, ‘Chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have so that you can fully resist serious disease…I have never seen a group other than this show a 200% increase over normal patients.’

Chiropractic For Children

children_and_chiropracticWhy would a child have a spine and nervous system problem? Traumatic births. Learning to walk. Slips. Falls. The list is endless. Yet, because children have such an adaptive capacity, these problems are often brushed off as “growing pains” or just a “phase they’re going through.”

“As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.”

Many patients report that chiropractic care has been helpful for colic, ear infections, erratic sleeping habits, bedwetting, scoliosis, “growing pains” and many other common childhood health complaints.

The concern that many parents have is that chiropractic adjustments will be too forceful. They mistakenly think that their child will receive adjustments like ones they receive. Not only are adjusting techniques modified for each person’s size and unique spinal problem, an infant’s spine rarely has the long-standing muscle tightness seen in adults. This makes a child’s chiropractic adjustments gentle.

Knowing exactly where to adjust, newborns and infants are adjusted with no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato. Many parents have commented that they see almost instant improvements in the well-being of their child.

If You Think it’s a Muscle…

If You Think it's a MuscleYou’re right, your pain could be coming from a muscle. It could also be coming from a joint, a ligament, a tendon, some fascia, a bone, a blood vessel or just about any deep tissue. In reality, ‘classifying’ your pain adds nothing to your healing process, but having a clear nerve system does.

Tissues devoid of animating Life cannot repair or heal. Cut into a LIFELESS steak (a muscle), and it will never mend. Injure a LIVE body part however, and it will reorganize itself successfully as long as it receives 100% innate intelligence from the nerve system – regardless of what sensation you feel. When that power of Life flows – you heal. When it trickles – you don’t. When it stops – you die.

As Chiropractors, we have compassion for any discomfort you present with. But realize, while naming your ’tissue of pain’ (diagnosis) may provide some peace of mind… detecting and correcting the cause (adjustment) will restore your health. For us, what hurts is not nearly important as what’s Subluxated.
