Disease Care or Health Care?

Which type of care makes sense to you?

health-disease

Disease care is offered by someone who is attempting or treat symptoms, alleviate pain or “cure” disease.  This is an “outside in” approach.  Usually, a person waits until they have a symptom and seek care to treat the pain with drugs, therapy or surgery.  A person who prescribes to this type of care ignores the cause of the problem and tries to simply cover it up.  They also ignore the powerful healing ability of the body and the functioning of the body as a whole.

Health care, on the other hand, does not treat symptoms or disease, but rather concerns itself with making sure the body is working the best it can internally—an “inside out” approach.  A person who prescribes to this type of care recognizes the internal wisdom of the body that heals, repairs and maintains function within the body and makes sure there is no interference to this mechanism.  This type of care goes after the cause of the problem rather than covering it up.

Chiropractors provide health care.  They concern themselves with interference to the system of the body that controls all functions—the nerve system.  Vertebral subluxations cause interference to the nerve system, therefore body functioning is decreased and thus the person’s overall health suffers.  Chiropractors also respect the body’s innate wisdom and constant striving to maintain health.

If going after the cause of the problem and thus maintaining the functioning of the body from within make more sense to you than treating the symptom or disease, then you are taking care of your health.

As chiropractors, we are proud to offer you this type of care that can truly be called health care.

Common Factors That Affect Healing

Most of our patients begin care because they have an ache, pain or some other health issue.  Naturally, they want it resolved as quickly as possible.

Ingest a pain reliever and within minutes the drug disperses throughout your body, numbing the symptom.  Many of us have grown accustomed to this almost instantaneous result.  Granted, it’s produced by fooling the body so it can’t feel the symptom.  The cause is still there.  But the annoying symptom is gone.

Chiropractic care works differently.

Instead of suppressing the symptom, chiropractic care looks to reduce nerve interference.  Your body is then better able to function and heal as designed and symptoms often lessen.

How long does that take? Since we’re relying on you and your body’s recuperative ability, it’s difficult to predict.  Here are seven of the major factors.

Your Problem – Certain types of health issues resolve more quickly than others.  That’s because instead of focusing on the problem in the person, we focus on the person with the problem.

How Long You’ve Had It – Most spinal problems can exist without symptoms for years, even decades.  The ache or pain may have shown up last week, but it has been festering for some time.  More recent problems tend to resolve faster than long-standing issues.

Your Health – Is your immune system compromised? Do you tend to do a lot of sitting?  Are you overweight? Do you get enough restful sleep? Are you a smoker? Those who lack vitality often find it takes longer to recover.

Your Age – The older you are, the slower we heal.  In your teens or twenties a little cut on your hand might heal in three or four days.  With each passing decade it takes longer and longer.

Your Lifestyle – What are you willing to do (or stop doing!) between visits to give your body the best opportunity to heal? Be mindful of your diet, exercise, increase your water intake or make other smart choices regarding your well-being.

Your Stress Levels – There are three types of stress.  Physical stress, such as trauma from a car accident.  Chemical stress, such as drugs, alcohol or poor diet.  And emotional stress from worry, depression, anger or fear.  Those with a greater stress burden take longer to heal.

Your Attitude – The mind-body connection plays an important role.  Take part in your care.  Believe we can help.  Want better health.  These can speed your recovery.  Become invested in your health.  Chiropractic care is a partnership.

Your Visit Schedule – Your care plan is designed to produce the best results in the shortest amount of time.  Results come from the momentum of regular, periodic visits.  Missing a visit can impede your progress.

What Exactly is a Vertebral Subluxation?

subluxation2It goes by different names: Subluxation, Vertebral Subluxation, Vertebral Subluxation Complex or simply Nerve Interference. Regardless of its name, it’s probably new to you. Turns out, chiropractors are the only licensed professionals who know how to detect and reduce it. But what exactly is it?

Vertebral Subluxations occur when spinal vertebrae lose their normal motion or position. This can irritate nearby nerves that pass out from the spinal column to organs and tissues of your body.

Because nerves carry messages between your brain and your body, controlling and regulating everything, vertebral subluxations are very important!

There are three main causes:

  • Physical causes, such as a car accident, a slip or fall, a sports injury, repetitive movements, improper lifting, inadequate sleep and bad posture.
  • Emotional causes, such as grief over the death of a loved one, anger and other negative emotions that affect muscle tone can produce a burden on your body.
  • Chemical causes, that may result from poor nutrition, smoking, alcohol and substance abuse and toxins in your external environment, food and water.

Chiropractors receive special training to adjust the spine, which is designed to help reduce the nerve interference and allow the body to function more normally. Longstanding vertebral subluxations can produce unhelpful muscle patterns that may require a series of frequent visits to strengthen and retrain.

The biggest problem with vertebral subluxations is the fact that you often don’t even know that you have them!

Regular chiropractic checkups, even without obvious symptoms, can keep your nervous system in tip-top working order; much the same as receiving regular dental care keeps your teeth and gums healthy. If you have any questions about vertebral subluxations or the effects that they can have on your health, please be sure to ask at your next visit.
