Fun Fact Friday ~ Senses

visionhearingtastesmelltouch

Along with the five traditional senses of sound, sight, touch, smell and taste, humans have 15 “other senses.” These include balance, temperature, pain and time as well as internal senses for suffocation, thirst, and fullness.

When You Stop Feeling

numb-it-all-pills

Awareness is essential to the healing process. When you get hurt, it’s the role of the nerve system to sense the damage and inform your brain (pain) so the healing can start. Masking the ‘awareness’ step creates problems.

Unfortunately, in an effort to create perpetual comfort, drug companies have become very good at desensitizing people to their own physical and emotional pain alarm systems – and apparently those around them as well. According to a recent study by Ohio State University, when you take something as simple as acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce your pain, you may also be decreasing your empathy for both the physical and social suffering of others as well. So much for the old saying “…I feel your pain.”

While the medical profession and its pharmaceutical cousins strive to numb you, Chiropractors remove tension in your nervous system so you can fully experience your environment and respond to whatever life throws at you, both good and bad. No one likes to feel pain or discomfort, but we need to recognize it as the body’s attempt to save itself. When you stop feeling, you stop healing – not only yourself, but potentially everyone around you.

Calm Down!

fec187702c530a52e3d89ec2d7badf73

A calm person is far more likely to heal quicker and respond faster than a hysterical one with similar health problems.  Calmness accelerates healing and recovery time. In fact, calmness not only governs healing, it is a prime determinant of “Quality of Life.”

While inflammation, pain and edema can be described as noise in the cellular matrix of the body, fear, worry and irritation would be noise in the nerve system. These noises interfere with our lives, exhaust us, and wear down our resistance to disease, making us more susceptible to colds and flu, impeding recovery.

When our bodies are quiet, they are capable of amazing things. Calming this “noise” or stress in the nerve system is probably the single most important factor in increasing the body’s ability to heal itself and in increasing quality of life. When our nerve system is quiet we are able to think more clearly, concentrate better and adapt to the environment at a much higher level.

A chiropractic adjustment is the quickest and most effective way to calm the nerve system and improve healing. Since the nerve system is the chief means of communication in the body, noise can interfere with nerve flow and lead to health problems. Doctors of chiropractic specialize in calming the nerve system by restoring vital communication within the body by delivering a chiropractic adjustment to correct vertebral subluxations.

Are You Sure You, and Your Family, Are Protected?

Sun Protection

As we go through life, we learn about different ways to protect our health. Most of us recognize that exercising, eating balanced meals, and drinking good water are all part of what we should be doing everyday to keep our health strong. We all know that protecting ourselves from the sun is a good idea, so we don’t get skin cancer later in life. Our parents tried to have us eat our vegetables so we would grow up “big and strong”. We also know that wearing approved sunglasses with the appropriate UVA and UVB filters and polarization is also a good idea so we don’t develop eye problems. Thinking ahead is the KEY, but there is one part within us that never gets much attention because it’s “out of sight, out of mind”, or so we think it is. In reality, it is THE MOST important and the most abused. I like running your automobile until it just seizes up, because you changed the oil in it. Or are you okay with running your body until it breaks, like an automobile that does not get an oil change?

It is the Central Nervous System and Brain.

Go ahead and look it up. The Central Nervous System and brain is “The Master System”. Nothing will heal, repair, or adapt without the brain first doing something. The messages coming from the brain have to be clear and unhindered or those messages will be distorted. That is the BIGGEST key to your health. And making it a lifestyle is even more important.

Regular “tune-ups” need to be done or problems can develop. Health comes from the inside-out and placing your health totally in a first aid system is generally a mistake. We need the first aid system for emergencies, but those who forget to look at the vitalistic side of their health will never heal to their fullest potential. Healing starts from within. Invest in your health through chiropractic and you’ll start notice all those sunny days ahead.

Treating The Bark

ouching dogYou walk into your Chiropractor’s office, lay on the table and point to where it hurts. But the Chiropractor adjusts a totally different part of your spine… not even close to where you feel the pain. Why is that?

There’s an old saying that goes when you step on a dog’s tail, it barks out the other end. In Chiropractic, that means where you hurt (the bark) isn’t necessarily where the problem is (the tail). Many times the symptom you feel in one area is due to a remote cause. For example, someone with sciatica may feel pain down their leg, but the cause of the problem is a Vertebral Subluxation in their spine.

Chiropractors recognize that if you address the cause of the symptom, the body will no longer have need to produce it. That’s why Chiropractors focus on correcting underlying problems and not superficial effects. Chasing after symptoms is like a dog chasing its own tail – spinning around and around until it gets dizzy, confused and frustrated. It’s much smarter to address the underlying cause from the start.

Squat Like A Toddler

Toddler SquattingIf you ever want to observe perfect biomechanics, watch a toddler pick up a toy from the floor.  You’ll never see them bending over, moaning in agony like an old man.  They drop their hips, maintain a perfect center of gravity while lowering themselves, then pop right back up with the ease of an Olympic lifter.

Interestingly enough, they never attended an ‘ergonomics’ class to acquire such perfect form.  Their little bodies are innately designed to do it – and at one time in your life, your body worked like that too.  You were able to lift, bend, sit, walk, run, sleep and with perfect, innate biomechanics.  But somewhere along the way, your body picked up bad habits and compensated movements that now create pain and physical limitations in your daily Life.

If PAIN is your body forgetting how to line up and move the way it was originally designed to, HEALTH is the return to the original blueprint.  If you want to get your Life back, remind your body how it was meant to function.  Sounds like the perfect job for a Chiropractor.
